AHL Predictive Analysis – 29 December

(If you regularly read this AHL analysis, start under the title “The 29 December Chart,” and don’t miss the ending section “What Do We Already Know?”.)

Below is your AHL Point Predictor and Playoff Qualifying Curve (PQC) update for AHL games ending Saturday, 29 December. What are we showing here? Where the AHL is going, not where they are after the last games played.

How Will We Do It? Check back here several times a week as we provide you the simple chart below where you can follow the AHL’s march to the Playoffs. The chart tells you two things: each team’s finishing points based on current play projected over the 76 game season; and our PQC calls as every team reaches each 10-game marker (i.e. Game 10, 20, 30, etc.). As teams’ PQC call changes, their standings’ line color changes to the appropriate PQC designation as explained below.

The 29 December Chart

Here are the two Conferences after games completed on 29 December:

AHL_29Dec

Note our projected separation from 8th to 9th seed in both Conferences is one win.

Here are notes to explain the chart:

1. AHL Conferences are shown Western and Eastern from left to right as they would be on a map. The far left column in each chart titled ‘AHL Stnd’ indicates current team AHL standings as of the posted date. And teams use standard AHL abbreviations and color schemes.

2. ‘GP’ = Games Played.

3. ‘eW’ = Estimated Wins, our own formulary as the season progresses.

4. ‘eL’ = Estimated Losses

5. ‘eOTL’ = Estimated Overtime Losses, the third point in three-point games

6. ‘ePts’ = Estimated Points

7. ‘ePt Rnk’ = Estimated Points Rank, our order of how they will fare overall

8. And the ‘PQC Code’: ‘CC’ = Chasing Calder, or IN the Playoffs; ‘SS’ = Sharpening Skates, or just shy of IN the Playoffs; ‘ITC’ = In The Curve, or playing right about on average; ‘DoC’ = Dusting Off Clubs, or almost OUT of the Playoffs; ‘T2’ = Tee Time, or OUT of the Playoffs; and ‘SotP’ = Shot Off The Post, or a bad call of CC or T2. Remember, the PQC Codes get called every 10 games.

“What Do We Already Know?”

St. John’s was the Eastern Conference’s first team to reach the G30 mark on 21 December, just remaining In The Curve (ITC). San Antonio remained at Tee Time (T2) out West. All G30’s are complete on 5 January with Albany’s 30th game. Current projections in the Eastern Conference are for teams needing 81 standings points to make the Calder Cup playoffs. In the West, it currently looks like 86 points are required.

After games on 29 December, the Eastern Conference G30 PQC status is below:

EastG30

Projected at G30, the last team that could have joined Binghamton, Springfield and Syracuse in the Chasing Calder (CC) category fell out yesterday. Ten others will be In The Curve (ITC) at G30. And Adirondack joins Connecticut as the current Tee Time (T2) squads in the East.

And on 29 December, Western Conference G30 PQC status is below:

WestG30

Eight more teams’ will be ITC calls. And last night, Hamilton joined San Antonio and Peoria as the Conference’s T2 calls for G30.

AHL Predictive Analysis – 26 December

(If you regularly read this AHL analysis, start under the title “The 26 December Chart,” and don’t miss the ending section “What Do We Already Know?”.)

Below is your AHL Point Predictor and Playoff Qualifying Curve (PQC) update for AHL games ending Wednesday, 26 December.

The 26 December Chart

Here are the two Conferences after games completed on 26 December:

AHL_26Dec

Note our projected separation from 8th to 10th seed in the Eastern Conference is tie breakers while the West’s spread for 8th through 9th projected seeds is 1.5 wins.

Here are notes to explain the chart:

1. AHL Conferences are displayed Western and Eastern from left to right as they would be on a map.

All of the G30’s finish on 5 January with Albany’s 30th game. Current projections in the Eastern Conference are for teams needing 82 standings points to make the Calder Cup playoffs. Teams out West need to earn 87.

After games on 26 December, the Eastern Conference G30 PQC status is below:

EastG30

Projected at G30, there is still only one team who can join Binghamton, Springfield and Syracuse in the Chasing Calder (CC) category. Ten more will not beat an ITC call with three of them still in jeopardy of a possible T2 call. And one more team cannot beat a Dusting Off Clubs (DoC) call. We still have 11 total teams we know are not at T2 by their 30th game.

And on 26 December, Western Conference G30 PQC status is below:

WestG30

There are two more potential CC calls to join Abbotsford and Charlotte in the West by G30. Only one more team has a shot at an SS call. Seven more teams’ maximum is an ITC call. And before this weekend is through, one more Western team joins San Antonio and Peoria as the Conference’s T2 calls for G30. And the West holds a maximum of 12 teams who are not eliminated by G30.

Summary

This is the updated AHL Point Predictor and PQC Standings chart based on games ending 26 December. From on our analysis, five teams are already IN the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs while three more are OUT. A maximum of eight teams could still be a CC call by G30. Equally, a total of three more teams (a drop of four) could be at T2 by G30. Somewhere in the middle of the extremes is our answer at G30.

Below is a final rolling list of new G30 PQC calls and old G20’s. New G30 entries, or G20 CC and T2 calls when they hit the G30 mark, stand in bold font.

And on 22 December, Western Conference G30 PQC status is below:

WestG30

Abbotsford was the West’s only CC team until Charlotte joined them on 21 December. There are now only two others who still have a shot at CC by G30. Two teams cannot beat an SS call by G30.
